Although it is not usually necessary to rent a car in Prague to fully enjoy the city, having a private vehicle gives you the freedom to take day trips and explore other interesting locations in the Czech Republic.

You can rent your car already at Prague-Ruzyně airport, thus avoiding having to take a taxi or shuttle bus to your hotel, or at one of the car rental offices in the city.

In both cases it is recommended to book before departure to have more freedom of choice and to take advantage of cheaper prices (economy cars are usually the first to be booked).

Car hire at Prague Airport

Renting a car at the airport is the best way to discover the surroundings of Prague

Start your holiday in Prague in total freedom: hiring a car at the airport is the best way to get off to a good start, without a fixed itinerary or timetable.

The city centre is about 15 km away and without traffic can be reached in just twenty minutes, but the rental car allows you to combine your stay in the capital with visits to other famous cities such as Brno and Pilsen and smaller, lesser-known locations.

What are the advantages of hiring a car directly at the airport? Airport offices generally have longer opening hours than those in the city, and you will also find multilingual staff to assist you.

Several Czech and international car rental companies, such as Avis, Budget, Czechocar, EuropCar, Hertz, Rentplus and Sixt, have an office at Prague Airport, giving you a good choice of rates and additional services. All companies have their offices on the ground floor of car park C.

It is always advisable to book in advance to find the best deals. Using the search form on this page you can compare the prices of different agencies and choose the most suitable car for your trip. In just a few clicks you will secure your car at the best market price by booking only with serious and reliable agencies.

Driving in Prague

With its maze of medieval streets, the centre of Prague is not exactly easy to get around by car. We therefore advise you to be very careful if you drive around the city: pay attention to one-way streets and prohibited zones. If you drive on a street with mixed traffic (cars and trams), remember that the tram always has right of way.

Fortunately, however, traffic regulations in the Czech Republic are similar to those in the rest of Europe, which will certainly make driving easier for you. The speed limit in built-up areas is 50 km/h, seat belts are compulsory, mobile phones may not be used while driving and headlights must be kept on at all times.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is absolutely forbidden to drink before or while driving: in Prague, as in the entire Czech Republic, no tolerance of blood alcohol levels is allowed.

When tourism in Prague has restarted, due to the crisis in raw materials and electronic components, they have not managed to buy back enough cars.

The consequence is that today every company has far fewer cars than in 2019 and cannot cope with the high demand. This leads to higher prices and less availability, especially during the high season.

The advice we give you is therefore to book the car well in advance, both to get the best prices but above all to be sure of having a rental car.

To reserve a car in Prague a credit card or debit card is sufficient. However, when you go to collect the car, you will need:
