Prague’s Beer Museum (in Czech Muzeum Piva) is the ideal place to learn more about the frothy beverage, taste excellent Czech beers in an atmospheric tavern and shop for themed souvenirs.
Dedicated to the national drink, this interesting and unpretentious museum housed in a historical building with stone vaults will introduce you to the history of brewing in the Czech Republic and all the traditions associated with it.
Of modern design, the Prague Beer Museum makes use of multimedia installations, videos, mannequins and sound effects, but only when you can smell the heady scent of malt and hops will you reach the triumph of the senses.
The tour ends with the inevitable – and much-anticipated – tasting of several types of Czech beer in the splendid tavern housed in historic 13th-century cellars. The tavern is divided into themed rooms that recreate two different historical periods: you can choose to enjoy your beers in a 19th-century pub or in a communist-era bar.
Entrance tickets to the Prague Beer Museum can be purchased directly at the museum entrance, which is open daily from late morning until evening. Holders of the Prague Card, the official tourist card of the city of Prague, are entitled to a discount on the ticket price.
A wine tasting is included in the ticket. The tour lasts about 90 minutes.
It is worth spending a little over the price of the simple tour to add the ‘Bottle Your Own Beer Experience’. You can have fun filling a glass bottle with beer using a professional machine; on the bottle you can then apply a label created by you, with the writing and graphics of your choice.
Resist the temptation to drink it straight away so you can take home a very original souvenir, either for yourself or to give to a friend. If you want to please more friends, you can buy more beer-themed souvenirs in the museum’s well-stocked shop.
The Prague Beer Museum is located in the heart of the Czech capital, just a five-minute walk from the central Charles Bridge. The area is easily accessible by public transport or hop on hop off tourist buses.
Be careful not to confuse the Beer Museum with the Prague Beer Museum Gastropub, an establishment with two locations in the city that offers a list of 30 quality beers on tap, all brewed in the Czech Republic. If you search Google Maps for “Beer Museum” you will find the museum, and “Prague Beer Museum” the gastropub.
If you’re a fan of Czech beer, you can take part in other themed activities after the Beer Museum: if the idea of bathing in beer in one of Prague’s many beer spas doesn’t appeal to you, take part in a tour of Prague’s historic breweries anyway!
City Card allow you to save on public transport and / or on the entrances to the main tourist attractions.
